Plotinus asks: if there were a body outside the universe, would the universe be able to see it, if it had an eye on its outside and nothing else was in the way? Answer: no, because the body outside the universe would proceed from a principle completely other than the universal soul, and could not partake in the correspondence of like to like by which perception is possible. (Enneads IV.5.8.)
